Remember Those Who Face Hunger During Lenten Soup Suppers

Date posted: Friday 05 February 2016

This is the time of year when many of our congregations serve soup lunches or dinners along with their Lenten worship services. This can also be an appropriate time for us to remember that while we are eating warm and plentiful food, others around the world are not as fortunate.

One way to gently do this is to use the wonderful assortment of placemats that the ELCA World Hunger program has available. Some of them can be downloaded and printed while others can be ordered in quantity. Check under Resources at the ELCA World Hunger website.

My congregation has used these placemats and others from ELCA Global Mission for our suppers. We emphasized World Hunger one week and then made table tents that talked about the places in the world to which our congregation specifically related. In our case that was Tanzania, Guatemala and Haiti, and the table tents encouraged us to consider how our global companions face hunger - and how we can help.
