The Rev. Peter Harrits

Director of Bega Kwa Bega, Assistant to the Bishop

The Rev. Peter Harrits joined the synod in January 2014 as Director of Bega Kwa Bega (BKB), our Tanzania mission with the Iringa Diocese. A graduate of Yale Divinity, Peter was ordained in 2011 and served his first call as Country Coordinator in Malaysia with ELCA Young Adults in Global Mission. Peter and his wife Jenny live in St. Paul with their daughters and two dogs, Kasper and Daisy.

In his role as Director of Bega Kwa Bega, Peter:

  • Oversees the overall work of the BKB partnership
  • Serves as liaison to the Iringa Committee as well as the ELCA Global Mission unit
  • Supervises a team of volunteers related to the work of Bega Kwa Bega

In his role as Assistant to the Bishop, Peter:

  • Supports congregations in strengthening their local and global partnerships
  • Advises and implements meaningful opportunities for young adults

As part of his work with the synod, Peter has been trained as a qualified administrator of the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI), a tool for helping groups and individuals assess their intercultural competence. He is able to provide coaching for groups to become more effectively engaged in diversity.
