Guatemala Friends has been hosting a series about immigration. During our June 24 gathering, hosted by Easter Lutheran, Pastor Karen Castillo and Delegation Coordinator Valeria Gil shared the recent experience they had with Atonement Lutheran, Boulder, Colo., in the Border Immersion Program in El Paso, Texas.
This program provided them with the opportunity to personally observe and better understand the complexity of the immigration process. While the ILAG does not encourage immigration, the leaders do want to ensure that their members have the knowledge and tools to make well-informed, safe decisions.
During their experience, Pastor Karen and Valeria learned about the three ways to cross into the U.S.:
- Entry through the border without passage at official border entry
- Turn oneself in and prove credible fear, or
- Complete a CBP—one application to meet with an immigration officer.
All entries present some difficulties for those entering the U.S. In addition, they shared personal testimony from immigrants, a border patrol agent, and a judge which substantiated the plight and risk inherent in the immigration process. Pastor Karen and Valeria also recounted the continued challenges facing those staying in shelters or settling in the U.S.
We are grateful to have had the opportunity to learn more about the immigration process for our brothers and sisters in Christ, so that we can support them as neighbors, whether here in the U.S. or in Guatemala.
If you were not able to join us to hear this important discussion, or would like a refresher, below is a link to the video recording, which includes the presentation slides from ILAG.
