We believe it is the Creator’s intent that all people are provided those things that protect human dignity and make for healthy life: adequate food and shelter, meaningful work, safe communities, health care, and education.

Thus begins “A Common Foundation: Shared Principles for Work on Overcoming Poverty,” the document signed in 2004 by 35 ecumenical and interfaith leaders in the state of Minnesota. Since that time, the Ending Poverty leadership team has been seeking to make that document a living reality.

Now, the questions before us are these: What do we need to do to end poverty in Minnesota in the next 15 years? What are the milestones that will mark the accomplishment of this vision?

To answer those questions we have adopted the theme, “A Minnesota without Poverty—Where All Children Thrive: A 2020 Vision.” We believe that children who thrive grow up to be adults who thrive.

We also know that one synod cannot overcome poverty alone—or in one geographic area. Therefore we are joining together with many others throughout the state and from a variety of faith traditions that also sense God’s call to overcome poverty and to walk with people living in poverty.

Now to God who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to (God) be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen  (Ephesians 3:20-21)
